Chico >> A man attempted to grab a girl as she walked near downtown Chico Sunday evening but was thwarted by the girl’s dog, police said.

The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, when Chico police received a call from the mother of a 12-year-old girl reporting that a man had tried to grab the girl as she was walking the family dog in the 100 block of East 12th Street near Park Avenue.

The man reached out to grab the girl and the girl’s dog, a boxer, growled and snapped at the man, stopping the attack, police said.

The girl then ran home and told her parents of the attempted assault, police said. The man was last seen running west on East 12th Street toward Park Avenue.

Officers searched the area but could not find the man.

The man is described by police as thin, Hispanic or Indian, with a dark-colored beard or goatee and long hair which was in a ponytail or bun. The man was wearing a tan camouflage coat, had strong body odor and appeared disheveled.

The family dog was safe, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the man is asked to call Chico police at 897-4911.
